Funeral Rites For Herek Will Be Held Monday
Victim of Accident Was Employee of Street Car Company in Days of Horse-cars.
Funeral services for Matthew Herek, 70 years old, who died at 1:30 p.m. Friday of injuries received earlier in the morning when he was crushed between an embankment on the Garvin Heights road and city truck on which he was riding, will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus' church with the Rt. Rev. J. W. J. Pacholski officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
The fatal accident Friday occurred when the truck on which several men employed by the city in constructing a new road on Garvin Heights were riding, failed to climb a sharp incline, and the driver swerved the machine to keep it from rolling backwards down the hill. Mr. Herek was rushed to the Winona General Hospital, where an emergency operation to save his life failed.
Drove Horse-Cars
Mr. Herek came to Winona 47 years ago from Poland and became known to many here. He was driver on local street cars in the days when horses still provided the motive power and when the main line extended no farther east than Fire Station No. 2 on East Third street and did not go around the loop.
For almost 15 years he was familiar to hundreds of school children when he was employed as janitor at the Washington school.
Mr. Herek, who lived at 369 Mankato Avenue, is survived by his wife and eight children, one son, Louis, at home; Mrs. Thomas Wiczek, Mrs. Carl Gernes and Mrs. Andrew Lelwica, of Winona; Mrs. Joseph Liberko and Mrs.John Briska, both of St. Paul; Miss Selma Herek of Chicago, and Miss Begnine Herek at home. He is also survived by a brother, Frank Herek of Supervior, Wis.
