About Mathias Christian Hansen
Mathias & Caroline Hansen Emigrated to NZ in 1883 on ship S.S. Tamaki with their 5 children. They settled in Geraldine & had more children. Mathias was the towns lamplighter for over 24 years. They lived at 62 Peel Street (now a back section) where the cottage still remains (2020) and is called the "Lamplighters Cottage". The Cottage was originally build around 1880 in mud & wattle but was rebuilt after WW1 with the original pulled down with the use of horses.
