About Mathias Harman, Jr.
(This ancestry.com profile has a lot more ancestors to investigate.)
Mathias Harmon married Mary Dunn on Jan 25, 1791, when he was 21 years old and she was 16.
Over the next 10 years Mary and Mathias apparently had 5 children (Daniel, Jezreel, Henry, Mary and Nancy) each about 2 years apart.
About a year after their youngest child Mary was born, Mathias, then 33, died when the horse on which he was riding "ran between two trees". (From the "Harman genealogy (southern branch) : with biographical sketches, 1700-1924", page 158). At that point the oldest of the 5 children would have been about 9 years old.

Indian fighter. In Indian battle with father and brother - killed 7 in Virginia at Tug River, think near Warfield, Virginia. ---
According to a fairly recent book, this is the Mathias that was involved in the Tug River Fight, though it's usually attributed to his Uncle "Skygusty" Mathias Harman. This event took place in the fall of 1788 as verified in Virginia State Papers. Henry, a brother to "Skygusty" Mathias Harmon, his 2 sons, Mathias and George plus neighbor George Draper went hunting late in the fall thinking that it was too late for the Indians to be out hunting. They used an old Indian trail that led from the Ohio River to the Clinch River settlements. While Henry made camp late in the afternoon, George and Mathias went hunting for game for dinner. George came back hurredly after finding a deserted Indian camp with fires still burning to warn the others that Indians were nearby. They decided to pack up camp and head back to the settlements in case their protection was needed at home. They instructed Mathias not to fight as he was too young. On the tense way back, Indians rushed them with a burst of flame and flying arrows. George had been lame from childhood and was attacked with tomahawks. He swung his gun and was able to bring down one brave to his knees, twice. Mathias grabbed the Tomahawk and ended the struggle. Henry in the meantime, had been struck with several arrows while loading his gun. Blood in the gun prevented it from firing -- but he raised it anyway scaring the Indians to retreat slightly. Young Mathias then asked if he could shoot and his family's response this time was "Yes, Quick, too". He shot and killed an Indian that looked like a chief. With 2 dead out of the Indian's party of 7, they decided to retreat and the Harmon party escaped with their lives. (C-2280)
