- "From the Wadena Pioneer Journal of June 18, 1931
- "MATT NEISES PASSES AWAY - RESIDENT OF WADENA FOR 37 YEARS DIES AT HIS HOME LAST SATURDAY
- "A good and staunch man, a pioneer of Wadena, Matt J Neises, died at his home, Saturday morning at 10:45, June 13, in the midst of his family and his brothers and sisters who all reached Wadena and were at the bedside when the end came.
- "Mr. Neises had been suffering for seven and one half weeks preceding his death and although given the best of care the inevitable closing of an active career could not be forestalled. He was 73 years, 1 month and 4 days of age.
- "Matt Jacob Neises was born on May 9, 1859 in Ashfeldt, Germany. Upon reaching young manhood he migrated to American shores and came to the St. Cloud neighborhood. There he met Miss Catherine Pehan to whom he was united in marriage at St. Nicolas, January 12, 1886. Mrs. and Mrs. Neises settled in Watkins after their marriage and there five children were born to them, Simon J, Catherine, Henry H., Nicholas D., and Jean.
- "The Neises family came to Wadena in 1894, when the village was small but flourishing. Here five children were born, Paul, Matt Jr, Sylvester, Louise and a daughter Barbara, who died at the age of 14 months.
- "Mr. Neises engaged in commercial pursuits in Wadena with outstanding success and acquired a substantial portion of this world's goods. He retired from active business about fifteen years ago but still retained an interest in the enterprises which his sons and daughters were managing, including stores in Wadena, Walker, Cass Lake and Waubun.
- "Throughout his residence of 37 years in this community Mr. Neises built up an enviable reputation as a conservative, upright and four square citizen and was widely respected wherever he was known.
- "He also gave freely of his time and substance towards the support of the St. Ann's Cathoic Church of which he was a pious and loyal communicant. He was interested in affairs of a fraternal nature and was a charter member of the St. Joseph's society and the Holy Name Society.
- "Funeral services were held on Monday from St. Ann's Church. Solemn Requiem High Mass was observed, the services being conducted by Rev. F. Lenger assisted by Rev. John Bielemeyer of Browerville and Rev. H. J. Yzerman of Verndale. Interment was made in the family lot in the Catholic cemetery in Wadena.
- "Mr. Neises' six sons acted as honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Matt Schmitz, Joseph Uselmann, Joseph Lorentz, Conrad Grabner, John Weinans and Peter Schmitz.
- "Mr. Neises is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Hensler, Mrs. Jean Nelson and Mrs. Louise Merickel of Wadena, six sons, Simon J, and Sylvester of Wadena, Henry of Walker, Nicolas of Waubun, Paul of Minneapolis, and Matt Jr., of Cass Lake, two sisters, Mrs. Susan Meyers and Mrs. Margaret Colopy of Chicago, and two brothers. Thomas of Crown Point, Indiana and John of Chicago, all of whom were present at the funeral and 13 grandchildren.
- "Out of town relatives and friends present at the last rites were, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Meyer and Mr. and Mrs. John Neises of Chicago, Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas Neises of Crown Point, Indiana, Ben Pehan of Browerville, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grindall and daughter Ruth of Walker, Mr. and Mrs. John Becker and family, George Becker, and Peter Becker of Urbank, Mr. and Mrs. Casper Pehan, Mrs Mike Lene and Mrs. John Prazac and children of Brandon, and Mr. and Mrs. George Peggan of Waubun."
