The son of Mathias & Catherine (Long) Parthemore, in 1860 he was a carpenter presumably living in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not in the census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 28, 1862, as a corporal with Co. A, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 8, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg June 27, 1863, mustered into federal service there June 28 as a private with Co. F, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). He deserted July 26 from Camp Stahl, Maryland, but returned on November 15 and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864, leading one to suspect that he offered a good explanation for his absence. He last enlisted in Harrisburg August 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 18 as a corporal with Co. F, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.
He married Alice A. Laird September 3, 1868, in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, and fathered Sarah Elizabeth (b. 05/09/71), Anne Ida (b. 08/05/74, d. 04/07/83), Morris A. & Murvin Nisley (b. 08/05/74), Kate May (b. 12/28/76), and William Luke (b. 10/18/79). (From Dennis Brandt)
