Matilda (Maude) Ophoven Schmitz is buried in St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, Halliday, Dunn Co, North Dakota. This is a community cemetery located in the NW Corner of the NE Quarter of Section 31 in Twp 145N Range 91W. It is 1 mile East of Halliday. It is a combination of 3 cemeteries: St. Paul's Catholic, Our Savior's Lutheran and St. Paul's Lutheran. The sign on the cemetery says: Halliday Cemetery. Maude's grave is on the right near the white Crucifix statue.

Matilda Schmitz died Dec 21, 1994 in Killdeer, ND. Her funeral Mass was said from St. Paul's Catholic Church in Halliday on Monday, Dec 26, 1994. [This is from her funeral card. I don't know why her grave marker has her death date as 1996.]

Maude Ophoven was born in 1902 to August Ophoven and Margaret Hoffman Ophoven in Forest Prairie, MN, now called Watkins. She was the oldest child and her siblings were Cecilia Ophoven (Mrs. Henry) Buechele; Julia Ophoven; Roman (Irene Schraut) Ophoven; Alphonse (Irene Meyer) Ophoven; and Marcella (Mrs. Ben) Schaefers. Maude was named Matilda after her grandmother (Matilda Schoumakers) who came to America from Montfort, Holland, and died in childbirth after living in this country only 5 years. Maude (Mrs. William) Schmitz ran a tax business on Main Street in Halliday for about 40 years. She had one son, Harvey, and many nieces and nephews. [Maude was my aunt.
