Mine Inspector Report ACCIDENT No. 31-July 15, 1913-Matt Carlson; Franklin Mine.

Matt Carlson died on this day from injuries received at about 1:20 o'clock a.m., while at work as a miner at the 33rd level of No. 1 Shaft, Franklin.

Justice Fisher conducted an inquest over his body and the following witnesses testified:

Edward Isogarve: "I am a miner and was working at the 33rd level of No. 1 Shaft last night at the time of the accident to deceased. I broke a hose and came over to get a nipple. I saw a light ahead of me but paid no attention to it, as I am in a hurry. I saw some fellows on the box lying down. I asked them for a nipple, but they did not have any. Just then I heard the shoot man call, 'Come over here!' he hollered the second time, and I went over and saw a fellow in the shoot hanging onto the rope, could not get him up at first. It was Matt Carlson; we pulled him up and laid him down. He said his back was hurting. I could see where he had slipped on the step. The chute was empty. The chute-man was out to the shaft."

Jos. Bettini: "I am a chute-man. I knew deceased. About 1:30 a.m. I go inside to see if any car is coming for the trammers. I saw the car coming and I opened the door of the chute, and I passed over one minute after I saw the man fall down. When I found out a man was in there! I gave him a rope to help him get out, and I called for help. I suppose he went to get drills and that he fell down the chute."

Verdict: "We, the jury, find that Matt Carlson came to his death on the 15th day of July, 1913, from injuries received from falling down the chute at the 33rd level, No. 1 Shaft, Franklin Mine, accidentally."

Matt Carlson kuoli tänään vammoihinsa, jotka oli saanut ollessaan työssä noin klo 01:20 Franklin-kaivoksen kuilun nro 1 tasolla 33.

Edward Isogarve: "Olen kaivosmies ja olin viime yönä työssä kuilin nro 1 tasolla 33 onnettomuuden tapahtuessa. Rikoin letkun ja tulin hakemaan kiristäjää ("nipple"). Näin edessäni valoa, mutten kiinnittänyt siihen mitään huomioita, koska olin kiireinen. Näin joidenkin miesten makaavan ruutilaatikon luona. Kysyin oliko heillä kiristäjää, muttei heillä ollut. Jos. Bettini: "Olen suppilomies. Tunsin menehtyneen. Noin klo 1:30 menin sisään nähdäkseni olisiko yhtään vaunua tulossa vaunumiehille. Näin vaunun tulevan ja avasin suppilon oven, ja kuljin ohi noin minuutin päästä ja näin miehen pudonneen. Kun löysin hänet, ojensin hänelle köyden auttaakseni hänet ulos, ja huusin apua. Luullakseni hän oli mennyt hakemaan poranteriä ja että hän putosi suppiloon."

Päätös: "Me valamiehet toteamme, että Matt Carlson menehtyi vammoihinsa 15. heinäkuuta 1913 pudottuaan tapaturmaisesti suppiloon Franklin Mine -kaivoksen kuilun nro 1 tasolla 33."
