Matthew Bell, son of Matthew Bell of Scotland and Ireland, and elder brother of John was born near Coleraine, county Londonderry, about 1677. He came to America about 1710, landing in New York and, making his way to Pennsylvania, settled there in Chester county, ,in the part which was subsequently Lancaster and then Cumberland. It is believed that he married in Ireland. His children were: Samuel, William, John and Joseph.
