Burned by explosion, Dropped spark accidentally into powder while warming his dinner.
The Daily Mining Journal
March 14, 1887
Hancock, March 12. - Matthew Newitt [Jewitt], a miner at the Franklin mine, was so badly injured by a blast about noon yesterday that Dr. Rhodes, the mine physician, thinks the chances for his recovery are extremely doubtful. Newitt [Jewitt] was sitting on a can containing some black blasting powder, near a fire, when a spark set the powder off, the blast tearing the skin off over half of Newitt’s [Jewitt's] body.
