Matthew started life in Westmoreland County, where he inherited his father's estates. By 1806 he and his family were living in Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia) where they lived until about 1820.
By 1820 Matthew was living in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Probably in the part of Breckinridge that become Meade County, but that is uncertain. By 1829 he lived in Meade County, near Brandenburg.
Family tradition is that Matthew gave his children shoes for wedding presents.
Note that Matthew's known children were born between 1790 (John) and 1813 (Rebecca). While it is possible that Elizabeth, his first wife, was the mother of all his children, this range makes it unlikely. Matthew and Rhoda married in 1828, so this suggests a third wife between Elizabeth and Rhoda.
