About Matthias Hoover Prewett

I'm not certain that Matthias Hoover Pruett is buried in this cemetery but since it's the earliest burying place I could find record of of some of his sister Piety's family, there's a better chance he's buried here as to any place else, or he may have been buried somewhere on the 640 acres he owned in Tyler County, Texas.

Named after his maternal grandfather, Matthias was a grandson of Matthias & Mary Hoover who settled in Tennessee. His parents were Mary "Polly" (Hoover) Pruett & John Bradford Pruett. The information below came from public records, unless otherwise stated.

1811 is likely the year Matthias Hoover Pruett was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee.

OCT-26-1829 is the date shown in Rutherford County, Tennessee that a marriage license was issued to "Matthias H. Pruett." The intended wife-to-be was named as "Eliza Fox." The date they married and who performed the ceremony was not filled in but it was noted that John L. Hoover signed as bondsman. Eliza was a daughter of Jacob & Elizabeth (Broyles) Fox, and a sister of Sarah Fox who married Matthias' brother, Henry Pruett.

1830 census of Rutherford County, TN:

  • One male 15-20 (Matthias Hoover Pruett)
  • One female 20-30 (Eliza [Fox] Pruett)

They lived next door to his elder brother James Pruett, preceded by the residence of their father, John B. Pruett, preceded by the residence of Matthias Hoover (son of Christopher)--and two dwellings prior to that, the household of Pleasant (and wife, the former Nancy Rawlings--a daughter of Sarah [Hoover] & Wm. Rawlings) was recorded.

JAN-17-1833 is the date shown in Rutherford County, Tennessee that "M. H. Prewett" signed as bondsman for his brother, "Henry Prewett," when Henry obtained a license to marry Sarah Fox.

NOV-18-1833 is the date a deed was recorded in on page 96 of Rutherford County, Tennessee Court Minutes Book Y, in which "Matthias H. Prewitt" sold, or deeded 35 acres to Andrew Fox. This may pinpoint the time frame and provide support to the theory that Matthias & Eliza Pruett left Tennessee and ventured on to Texas, which is the story that was told to the late Family Historian Bob Jacobs, of Beech Grove, Tennessee, when he was collecting information on our early-day ancestors. It is a known fact that Matthias' elder sister, Piety (Pruett) Cruse (or Cruise), moved to Texas in or by the 1830's.

SEP 1842 is the month and year that Matthias Hoover Pruett died, according to research done by his great-great-great-granddaughter, Mrs. Rosemary Hill of New Braunfels, Texas. Mrs. Hill found an estate settlement that showed Matthias owned land in Tyler County, at the time of his passing. The document also named his wife and two daughters as his heirs. Mrs. Hill's records show that after Matthias death, Eliza married William McKinney, a preacher, and they moved to Milam County, Texas.

After Matthias Hoover Pruett passed away, his widow, Eliza, married William McKinney. The only record I've found of this couple, shows Eliza marked as being WAY younger than she would have been based on the 1830 census.

1850 census of Milam County, Texas, Williamson District, page 19-B, dwelling 475, OCT-15-1850:

  • William McKinney age 36 TN Farmer
  • Eliza McKinney age 33 TN

The record showed that McKinney's real estate value was $1000--a LOT of money for 1850. Eliza was marked as being a person over 20 years of age who could not read or write. The residence of Eliza’s daughter, Elizabeth, with her husband Moses Arledge and their daughter, Eliza Jane, was recorded in the same community, at dwelling 510.

Don't get your hopes up on getting any early marriage records from Milam County. All of their public records prior to 1874 were destroyed when the Courthouse burned.

The good news is, I found a write up on Robert Bruce Mayes in a Milam County, Texas book that stated his father, Thomas Newton Mayes, born JUN-16-1812 in Union District, South Carolina, married Mrs. Eliza McKinney, widow of William McKinney (and widow of Matthias Pruett), in 1860.

Eliza had married a Mr. Mays sometime between the 1850 and 1860 census. Here is the record of their household, in 1860, which included the two children of her eldest daughter, Louisa Jane (Pruett) Barclay . . .

1860 census of Milam County, Texas, Western District, pages 42 & 43, dwelling 280, JUL-15-1860:

  • T. N. Mays age 48 born in SC male Farmer
  • Eliza Mays age 44 born in TN female
  • Jane Mays age 28 born in TN female
  • Cintha Ann Mays age 26 (or 24) born in AL
  • Alex Mays age 23 born in AL male
  • R. B. Mays age 21 born in AL male
  • D. H. Mays age 19 born in AL male
  • E. M. Mays age 17 born in AL female
  • D. G. Mays age 15 born in AL male
  • J. A. Mays age 13 born in AL male
  • I. N. Mays age 11 born in AL male
  • M. L. J. Mays age 8 born in AL female
  • Sarah Barclay age 11 born in TX female
  • John Barclay age 8 born in TX male

The record showed that ALL of the children, from R. B. on down to the Barclay children, had attended school within the census year. The Barclay children were actually Eliza's (and Matthias Hoover Pruett's) grandchildren. "Jane Mays", listed just below Eliza, was actually Eliza's daughter, Louisa Jane (Pruett) Barclay. Her husband, John McQueen Barclay (father of Sarah and John), had died in 1855.

A Milam County History book, in a write-up in the biographical section on Robert Bruce Mayes, Mr. Mayes stated that his stepmother, Eliza (Eliza Fox Pruett McKinney Mayes), passed away in 1869.

Matthias Hoover Pruett & Eliza Fox had two daughters:

01) Louisa Jane Pruett MAY-21-1831 to JAN-18-1881 married 1847 John McQueen Barclay

02) Elizabeth Pruett FEB-14-1833 to JAN-08-1914 married Moses D. Arledge
