Maud (Matilda) Botetourt

Matilda fitz Thomas was born between 1269 and 1272.4

She was the daughter of Sir Thomas fitz Otes and Beatrice de Beauchamp.2,3 She married John de Botetourt, 1st Lord Botetourt, son of Edward I 'Longshanks', King of England, between 1 July 1285 and June 1292.1,5 She died after 28 May 1329.3

Maud was the sister of: 1.Otho;[1]

Maud's mother Beatrice later married William de Monte Caniso of Edwardeston.[1] Through this marriage Maud was the half-sister of: 1.William de Monte Caniso of Edwardeston, aged 24 and more in 30 Edward I;[1]

Maud was married to John de Boteturte alias de Boutetourte.[1]

Maud and John had children: 1.John, heir; 2.Otho; 3.Robert;

When Maud's mother Beatrice died William, her second husband, continued to hold properties from Beatrice's inheritance, by the courtesy of England, because of their joint offspring.[1] Otho, Maud's brother, was his mother's heir until he died, leaving Maud the heir to her mother, and when she was aged 20 or more, or 30 in 30 Edward I, heir to the properties, which until William's death, he had held of Beatrice's then Otho's inheritance.[1] Maud inherited properties in Dilewik, Kerdynton and Ronhale in Bedford, Linselade in Buckingham, Belchamp William in Essex, and Sheldesley Beauchamp in Worcester.[1]

In 17 Edward II [8 July 1323-7 July 1324], Maud and her husband, John Boutetourt, settled land and rent in Essex in Belchamp St Ethelbert, and the advowson of the church and the manor of Belchamp Otten (except the advowson of the church) on themselves for life, with remainder to John son of John Boutetourt and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to Otho and Robert, also his sons, then to the right heirs of Maud.[2]

Two years later, Maud was a widow as in 19 Edward II [8 July 1325-7 July 1326], Maud late the wife of John Butetourt granted land and the advowson of the church in Belchamp Otten in Essex to John son of John Butetourt and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to his brothers, Otto and Robert.[3] Also in 19 Edward II, John son of John Butetourt granted a messuage, land and rent in Belchamp Walter (William) to a chaplain in the church there, retaining the manors of Belchamp Walter, Belchamp Otten, and Gestingthorpe, Essex.[4]
