About Maurice FitzGerald

Newspapers - Evening Post 20 July 1886 Page 2 This article

A Tribute to Mr. Maurice FiteGerald, The Promier yesterday laid on the table of the House the last volume of early Parliamentary debates, oompiled by the late Mr. Maurice FitzGerald, and in doing so, said — With regard to this last volume of tho early Parliamentary debates compiled by the late Mr. Maurice FitzGerald, I may say rogarding him that when ho undertook the work he was suffering from the illnoss which has lately cost him his life. Ido not know if it is fitting for mo to speak much regarding him, but I may say that not only did bo perform the work ably and well, but ho was in fact one of our young colonials who took intense interest in the early history of tho colony, and ho was exceedingly pleased to undertake tho work and to know that in this way he was connecting himself with tho history of the colony. He knew when ho was performing his work that he had not long to live, and he felt that all through his work. All his dosire was in his last lllnoss to show that he, a young colonist, took an interest in the colony, and was able to leave a name behind him. He was a young man of great parts, fine intellect, and I need hardly say, fine moral character, and tho colony has lost in him ono of its most promising sons. (Cheers.) Sir Georgo Grey — Do I understand ho is dead? Tho Promier— Yes. Sir George Grey— l would suggest to the Government that it might bo a proper thing to erect a tombstono to his memory, with somo inscription showing that this was tho last work of his life. The Premior— l thank tho lion, member for the suggestion. I will consider it.
