About Maurice Gardner

Maurice was a master tailor and made clothes for the royal family. He was very rich and lived off Sloane Square at 12 Lincoln St, Chelsea. He made a lot of money on the stock exchange which he lost during the Wall St crash and went to live in Sao Paulo in Brazil. He spent the rest of his days tending his orange plantation and living with a native girl( possibly). His tailors shop was at 42 Sloane Street. Giorgio Armani is there now!

It was he who decided to change the family name from Starkovitch to Gardner. He chose the name after "Gardner's Corner" in London.

He and Sophie split up and he bought her a house in Bayswater Rd. They married in 1906.

In the 1911 census he is described as a cutter and fitter, and his wife as a dressmaker.

Living with them then was Franklin Peter, a governess aged 24 from Austria, and Dina Schnider a cook from Russia.

On his naturalisation cert his name is given as Alchonon Pezach Maurice Sherkovitz!
