Max Epstein

Max Epstein, was born in Augustow, Poland in 1859 under the name Chatskel Barntovsky. He came to the US in 1870 and changed his name. My great-grandmother was named Mary Solomon. She came to this country in 1865 with her parents Isaac and Boschye (Sarah). According to family lore Mary's uncle or great-uncle was Haym Salomon who helped finance the American Revolution. Another tidbit was that Max's uncle was Barney Barnato who was involved in the Kimberley Diamond Mines.

Max and Mary's children were Louis (born c. 1877), Ida (1878 or 1879), Jacob, the noted sculptor (11/10/1880), Hyman (8/28/1882), Chana (Annie) (12/1/1884), Irving (1891), Sylvia (Susie) (3/23/1895) and Harold (12/4/1899). Harold was my grandfather.

Ida married a man named Jacob Stone. They had three children, Florence Holly, Danny and Irving.

Louis married Deena Grozcky. They had four children: Ethel Evans, Abner Dean the cartoonist (d. 1982), Irving Evans who worked as a stage manager and treasurer for Radio City Music Hall, and Mickey Herbert.

Chana and Joe Solomon had five children: Harriet, Jerry, Irving, Mickey and Florence (d. 1981).

Hyman died unmarried at age 27. Sylvia married Alexander Press but never had children.

Harold married Naomi Schnitzer and had two children, Marthe (my mother) and Leonard. Both are deceased.

Dr. Irving Epstein died in 1978. He and his wife Leah had two children, Howard Evans and Martin Evans.
