Note: wikiGerman Max joined the paternal company in 1883, partner in 1888, promoted development of the Witkowitzer ironworks & defended with Albert von Rothschild their independence against the Karl (see Wittgenstein family) dominating the Austro-Hungarian coal industry. Max expanded his family companies, 1892-1916 acquiring 12,000 hectares of land in the Strechen (Rottenmann, Styria). His half-brother Rudolf Gutmann aquired land 1880-1966 in Kalwang (Styria), totalling Gutmann lands of 50,000 hectares beginning of WW- I. 1900 Max took over Maschinenfabrik Andritz (now Andritz AG)..1922 established the Bank Gutmann.. the Bank continues to this day. Max became a member of the House of Lords in 1917, received numerous awards, including the honorary doctorates from the universities of Aachen and Leoben. Gutmann was also President of Zentralverband of industrial of Austria. He generously promoted the peace initiatives by Bertha von Suttner.. His heirs sold the property Strechen during the annexation of Austria to the industrialist Friedrich Flick
