Richard (Raphael) Philipsborn wrote the following in 1937 in a letter to his nephews and nieces, Elsa, Grace, Martin, & Herbert Philipsborn: "Your grandfather, Meyer Gattman, was a very correct and punctilius gentleman with an extremely high sense of honor but with no knowledge of the phrase that life was a struggle. [How wrong was that!] He died in Budapest."
Herbert Philipsborn describes Meyer this way: "once a U.S. citizen, returned to Europe. Born in Bavaria. He was a soft touch - a kindly man."
