Melchor E. Engle, First Engle Settler

Son of unknown Engle and Catarina; Stepson of John Michael Beyerle Sr. Probably born about 1720 in Palatinate Germany. He was naturalized in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania August 21, 1743. He married (Mary) Magdalena Beyerle, daughter of his stepfather's first marriage.

Melchor and Magdalena had the following sons, all were named in his will except Frederick, who died young: Philip Engle Michael Engle John Engle William Engle Frederick Engle George Engle

MEMORIAL INSCRIPTION: Melchoir Engle, First Engle Settler, 1750.

[Note: This was a memorial placed many years later. The date refers to when he settled here, not his date of birth or death. According to land records in Pennsylvania and Virginia, it is probable that he settled in the area closer to 1754 than 1750.]

His wife Magdalena probably died in 1769 as land records indicate that there was a land distribution at that time in accordance with Melchor's will.
