Samuel Allen, III did not marry Mercy Burrell. There are no known records showing Joseph Alden with a daughter Mary or showing Samuel Allen marrying Mary Alden, while the available evidence points to Mary Pratt as the second wife of Samuel Allen. "Mary Alden" may not have existed.

Mercy Alden was born probably at Bridgewater say 1669 or earlier (married 1688); died after 28 July 1727 (husband's will). She was the daughter of Joseph Alden and Mary Simmons, and a descendant of Mayflower passengers John and Priscilla Alden, and of Peter Browne.

The 2002 edition of the Alden Silver Book specifically addresses the addition of a daughter for Joseph Allen named "Mary." The claim is that she was the wife of Samuel Allen, but Samuel's wife has been proven to be a different woman, named "Mary Pratt."[9]

Mayflower Descendant: An Illustrated Quarterly Magazine of Pilgrim Genealogy, History and Biography, 6:110. No daughters mentioned in the will of Joseph Alden so this letter written by grandson of Joseph is the basis for identifying Mercy as Joseph's daughter. "Two of the daughters married into the family of Snow of Bridgewater - the other married a Burrill of Weymouth".

There are arguments she was an Alden as well as arguments that she was a Pratt. I am linking my tree to her being an Alden because that is what the records my family has passed down.

She is not recognized by the Alden Society as being the daughter of Joseph Alden and Mary Simmons. It is believed by some that her name was in fact Mary Alden, and she was either adopted or raised by the Pratt's. Some authorities say that she is the daughter of deaf parents named Pratt. However, there are authorities who state she is in fact a daughter of Joseph Alden and his wife Mary Simmons, including some histories of the Mayflower Families. The writings of the Allen Family considered her to be a blood relative of the Aldens According to "A Genealogical History of the Jennings Family" by William Henry Jennings, he states that Mary Alden Allen is in fact the granddaughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. Ebenezer Alden who wrote the "Memorial of the Descendants of the Hon. John Alden" in 1867, lists Mary Alden as a daughter of Joseph Alden and granddaughter of John Alden and the wife of Samuel Allen, married in 1700. He lists their children as Joseph b. 1701, Benjamin b 1702, Mary b 1704, Rebecah b 1706, Matthew b 1708, Seth b. 1710, and Abigail b. not listed.
