About Mere / Mary Mink

Initial note from Hatte Blejer - see response from Shana Mink below: Mere REEB( b. Vieksniai,Lith. d Vryheid S Africa) married Yossef (Joseph) Mink (b.Akmene d.1926), Lithuania. They had a son Ber (Barney) Mink( b. Akmene, Lith.), who came to S Africa. I have corresponded once with Ronnie Mink, Barney's son. I have seen that a certain Mink family (Shana Mink Katz) has put out a search (JewishGen.com) for REEB and RIBAS, but she has not responded to by e-mails. We do tend to believe that 1) the REEB family was RIBAS, and 2) they came from Akmanene, NW Lithuania. It appears that the family name may have been Ribas, Rivas, Riv,etc. At this stage of our search we are uncertain. We do not know the source of the family name, be it the name of a place or person? We know where the family came from, even though at different periods of persecution they had to flee that area. This is our limited knowledge of the lineage and we cannot vouch for 100% authenticity? Documentation has been hard to get hold of as much of it was destroyed. If anyone is familiar with Reeb families from Israel or elsewhere, of the Jewish faith, from your past contacts, please inform me and we will be pleased to be contact.

Responding to Hatte Blejer: The Rib Family have been in Vieksniai since the 1700's...Mowshe Rib is documented in Vieksniai before the 1834 census. As far as I know, the name was RIB. RIBAS for a male and RIBAITE for a female. I have seen the name written as RYB and also as REIB. I do not know and have not managed to document what happened to the RIB family - where they dispersed to but the last of the RIB family were killed by the Nazi's in the Holocaust when they were march to the Mazheik forest, made to dig their own pit grave and shot and buried in this mass grave. pages of testimony are available in Vad Vashem for this branch of the Rib family who remained in Vieksniai up to 1941. I have traced some of the Rib family who emigrated to Riga in Latvia and then those that were not murdered in the Riga Ghetto emigrated to the USA, Canada and Israel. A large branch emigrated to South Africa. I have extensively documented the Rib family and those with possible links to the Rib family are welcome to contact me for any information they might wish to share or glean.
