About Meryl Evelyn Methot

Mrs. Evelyn Methot, widow of Capt. Jack Methot, States Steamship company skipper, and mother of the late Mayo Methot Bogart, Broadway and Hollywood star, died in the bedroom of her Eastmoreland home from a heart attack on her birthday Tuesday. She was found on the bedroom floor by a friend and companion who lived with her at 8003 SE 28th Ave., Mrs. Gladys Lucas. Mrs. Methot had long been ill and had been to the hospital twice recently. Mrs. Lucas and other friends had purchased some birthday gifts and had planned a party for Mrs. Methot for the day. Mrs. Methot was found about 9 a.m. and was believed to have died from the attack about 5 am. She was born in chicago November 27, 1880. She had lived in the Eastmoreland district more than 30 years. After the death of Captain Methot many years ago, her life was wrapped up in the career of her daughter, Mayo, who started in Portland in child parts. The daughter starred in stock company here and later on the Broadway stage and in movies. She married Humphrey Bogart in 1938 and divorced him seven years later. She died in June 1951. Many years ago Mrs. Methot worked as a police reporter for the Oregonian, it was said Tuesday, and often relived the experiences in later years. Her only relatives are nieces and nephews in California and the East. Her attorney, Peter A. Scwabe, said Mrs. Methot's will has created the Mayo Methot scholarship for Catlin school where May graduated in 1919. It was suggested that any remembrances may take the form of contributions to this scholarship fund. The funeral will be at 1 pm Friday at Finley's rose chapel, with private services at Portland Memorial and vault entombment beside her daughter there.
