About Michael Benjamin

FACTS REGARDING MICHAEL BENJAMIN My ancestor Michael Benjamin and his family lived in London's Gravel Lane and Field Lane for decades. My grandfather said we had Sephardi roots and that the family came to England in the late 1700s from Amsterdam. We know that Michael's Hebrew name was Menachem Menke and that his father was Simcha (New Synagogue records including Synagogue Scribes Ref Marriage NSM037 and birth record NSB B053 of grandson Michael Benjamin in 1822 showing his father as Henry Benjamin 'Naftali ben Menachem Menke' of Field Lane) We know he had a brother called Abraham There is an Abraham Benjamin with the Hebrew name Abraham ben Simcha and an Abraham Benjamin in Gravel Lane in 1799 who attended the New Synagogue as did Michael, The big question relates to the father and grandfather of Michael. No one has proved parentage beyond a reasonable doubt. His father could have been a Benjamin, a Mordecai or an Abraham. Research continues. September 2021
