French people were prohibited from settling in Puritan towns in colonial New England until the 1680s, so it is presumed that this Michael migrated there from the British Isles, and possibly was born there.
From an unidentified source: Michael, perhaps a French Huguenot refugee, came to Topsfield, Mass. before revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Michael m. Mary (Reed?). He was a large landowner. Around 1660 he settled on the farm astride the old Salem Road, and the farm remained in the family ever since. His son, Michael, Jr., became Topsfield's first medical doctor. Date of death might instead be 1717.
