

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VERMONT with the rank of LIEUTENANT. DAR Ancestor # A035054
Michael moved to Pownal, Vt, 1762, two years after the first settlement of the town; had a 2nd wife; was a leading man in Pownal where he became town clerk and selectman and is often mentioned in the town records; was the father of Josiah, the Revolutionary soldier.
His headstone reads: "Honest and Industrious in life, a friend to the poor, a patriot of 1776"
Many of his descendants became prominent in public life.

From Vermont Revolutionary Rolls: Michael Dunning served as Corporal in the Pownal Alarm Company of Capt. Benjamin Bates as marched to Castleton in the alarm in October 1781. Another reference states that Michael Dunning was appointed Commissioner of Sequestration, Oct 30, 1777.
The Vermont Revolutionary Rolls by Goodrich, Page 831, states Michael served as a Lt. In the Green Mountain Boys and was at Quebec in 1776 as a part of 'Major Brown's Detachment', which was a part of 'General Arnold's Regiment.'
