Michael Foley who hailed from county Cork, Ireland. Michael Foley enlisted at Cork for th Madras Artillery in 1839 and was discharged on a pension at Kamptee India as "Drill Sergent" on Feb 16, 1863. At the time he took his discharge he was serving in the 20th Brigade, Royal Regiment of Artillery. During his long service with the Army, Michael Foley was awarded the good Conduct medal for long and meritorious service and for "un exceptionable conduct." he was recognized as an expert Drill instructor and drilled the officers and rank and file whether mounted or dismounted and passed as an expert in the making of knots and splicing of ropes and when he volunteered for service in respect of the Indian Mutiny he was not allowed to go as "he was told his services were more needed where he was.
Some years after his discharge in India, michael appears to have migrated to malaya for he died in Kedah on April 2, 1877. michael Foley had a brother named James who was manager of the City of Cork Steam Packet Company's office, ireland and died in April 1875.
