About Michael Freiherr von Eitzing

BIOGRAPHY Michael was one of sixteen children of Stephan, Freiherr von Eitzing, and Catherine von Boskowicz. In 1490 one of Michael's elder brothers, Martin, took over the running of the family properties from their father Stephan. When Martin died in 1512 without progeny, Michael, some 20 years younger, took over the management of the estates. In 1509 he had received the lordship of Retz, and after the death of his uncle Oswald, one of the elder brothers of his father Stephan, in 1513 he also inherited the lordship of Drosendorf. He combined all Eitzing estates under him.

About 1490 Michael married Anna Plansky von Seeberg, daughter of Bosko Plansky, Freiherr von Seeberg, and Anna Schlick zu Passaun. Michael and Anna had at least six children (Ulrich IV, Christoph, Oswald, Erasmus I and Oswald Philipp), and a daughter Christina. Three sons and Christina would have progeny.

After the death of Maximilian I, his grandson Karl V became emperor. He resided in Madrid and handed over the rule of Austria to his brother Ferdinand, who had been educated in Spain and was not familiar with circumstances in Austria. The Austrian Estates, which greatly valued their freedoms, appealed to their traditional rights. Ferdinand found this excessive and considered that the Estates were fomenting rebellion. When their representatives, led by Michael, rejected what they considered to be a gross slander, they were accused of high treason. On 10 July 1522 the emperor appointed a court in Wiener Neustadt. Two leaders of the Estates, Michael and Johann von Puchheim, as well as two leaders of the Viennese citizenry - among them the mayor Dr. Siebenbürger - were sentenced to death, and on 19 August 1522 they were beheaded in the market place of Wiener Neustadt. The lordship of Retz and all the other estates owned by Michael were confiscated. However the family fiefs of his father Stephan remained spared from seizure.
