About Michael Howery

He was named at Paradise Township on 1 September 1781 as a Private in the 6th Company, Capt. Andrew Bolly commanding, 5th Battalion, York County Militia (6 Penn Archives 2:527). As Michel Howry he was named on 7 December 1782 as a Private 8th Class, 6th Company, Capt. Andrew Pawlly), 5th Battalion, York County Militia (6 Penn Archives 2:531). I also have an unsourced note that Michael Howery served as a Private, 5th Battalion, 6th Company, York County Militia on 27 December 1782 and September 1787. These several records might support the theory that there was more than one Michael Howery, but I have not been able to discover evidence that would place any others within the known Howery family.

On 20 November 1786 Michael posted bond for the marriage of John Paupes and his sister Cate Howry (Worrell). His name is shown as Micheal Howry when he married "Christeen Hartman" in 1786. In 1810 Michael Howery was living in Montgomery County, Virginia, as were his brothers Daniel and George.

In 1790 he was living in Botetourt County, Virginia, with one male and three females in his household. In 1811 Michael Howry joined with his brothers and brothers-in-law in conveying land to his brother Jacob Howry as part of the settlement of his father's estate. He signed his name with an "X," indicating that he could not write, either because of disability or illiteracy (Botetourt Co. Deed Bk. 10:529-31). On 2 December 1817 Michael Howry posted bond for the marriage of Jacob Epperly and Polly Howry.

He died before 22 October 1818 when his estate was appraised (Will Bk. 3:129). In August 1819 the estate inventory was prepared. Jacob, Allen and Michael Howery and Jacob Epperly divided his estate (Deed Bk. K:508). On 31 March 1834 Michael's children Daniel Howry and Polly his wife, Philip Howry and Elizabeth his wife, Elizabeth Smith, and Jonathan Howry and Polly his wife, sold 10 acres in Floyd County to John Epperly for $10 (Deed Bk. A:246).
