About Michael Malcolm Morgan Mitchell, Free 1810

In 1810 Jane Grono's father John went sealing and returned to celebrate Christmas 1813 with an amazing haul: 14000 seal skins, three tons of whale oil and ten sealers marooned four years on the New Zealand coast.

Jane married a survivor of that voyage, the middle aged Robert McKenzie.

Michael Mitchell arrived in Australia at Port Jackson on the 20th January 1820 as a seaman aboard the female convict transport "Lord Wellington".

Michael did not arrive in Australia until January 1820 and did not sail with any of the Gronos until 1822 when he went on a voyage to New Zealand with John Grono as the master of the ship. Source:- Ship's crew list details. Michael's parents and birthplace are unknown. Michael's death is unknown at present but Jane's death certificate tells us that Michael was her spouse when she died in 1865.

He arrived as a Seaman on the Lord Wellington, female convict ship in January 1820 and almost immediately joined the crew of the Lynx on a sealing expedition to the South Shetland Islands. They were away for about 2 years. On his return he worked for William Grono on his farm at Windsor before going on a couple more sealing expeditions with John Grono and Alexander Books as the masters on the vessels he sailed on. He then married Jane in 1827.
