About Michael Rowe

Michael Rowe ran a large drapers and gents outfitters at 28 Earl Street North, Dublin. He lived in a large house on North Circular Road with wife Margaret Kelly, their 2 children Katherine/Kattie, and John, Margaret's mother Catherine (Kitty) Kelly, nee Marks, and Margaret's brother James Kelly. James' family came from a similar business (Kellys of Waterford), which survived until very recently) so he joined his brother in law Michael in running the Dublin shop. He carried on in the family business after Michael Rowe died at 55 in 1896 although the business gradually became merged into the similar one run by his other Kelly in-laws, the Hickeys. Coinicidentally, Michael Rowe had started up his business in partnership with one of the Hickeys, who later left to run the Hickey business around 1895. Michael left a considerable amount when he died so Margaret and her 2 children were able to move to a large and pleasant house in the leafy suburbs of Rathfarnham. James Kelly eventually got married (at 45) and moved out to a pleasant house in Clontarf. The Rowe business carried on until shortly after the Civil War, when the name was finally discontinued, and thereafter the merged businesses all became Hickeys Stores. James Kelly and his family remained a key part of the Hickey Stores business through much of the 20thC.
