About Michael Wood

Data from Genealogy of the Lineal Descendants of William Wood by Clayton Wood Holmes, dated 1901, page 11

Michael Wood was born in England probably at Matlock in Derbyshire. No record of the date or of his marriage to his wife Mary. Neither can any record be found of the birth of any of his children except two. It is probable that Abigail was the oldest and Jacob the youngest. In just what order they should come is entirely a matter of conjecture. The three last are probably correct as any one could easily surmise. On the first settlement at Concord, Michael had a house and lot near the common. Later he settled upon the farm now occupied by Samuel Dennis where he died May 13 1674. His death must have been sudden as he left no will. There is no record of his wife's death. History says he was heavily interested in the iron works at Concord.

The 8 children of Michael Wood & Mary his wife were born in Concord, beginning 1642: Abigail, John, Nathaniel, Mary, Thomson, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

(II) Michael, only son of William and Margaret Wood, was born in England, probably at Matlock in Derbyshire, and died at Concord, Massachusetts, May 13, 1674, only three years after his father. He migrated to this country with his father in 1638, and on the first settlement of Concord had a house and lot near the common. Later he moved to a farm farther away ; and it is said that he was also heavily interested in the iron-works in that township. It is thought that his death must have been sudden, as he left no will.

Michael Wood had a wife Mary, whom he married in England, but no further facts are known about her.

There were eight children, all born in Concord, Massachusetts :

  1. Abigail, April 10, 1642;
  2. John, whose sketch follows;
  3. Nathaniel;
  4. Mary;
  5. Thomson;
  6. Abraham;
  7. Isaac; and
  8. Jacob. March 3, 1662.

The order of the children is conjectural, as the births of two only, probably the eldest and youngest, are recorded.

Two of the children died before their father, Nathaniel Wood on March 7, 1662, and Mary Wood on April 24, 1663.
