About Michael Zerkowitz

"Michael Sherkovitz", merchant, is mentioned in a letter written by Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, Landesrabbiner of Moravia, to Nathan's father, "Meir Sherkovitz" [Markus Zerkowitz]. In 1857, Leipnik census records indicate that Michael (whose birthdate is erroneously given as 13 June 1825) was sharing household #29 with his father and his youngest brother, Sigmund.

In 1866, Michael Zerkowitz was issued a "certificate of good conduct" by the chief administrator in Leipnik:

"The chief administrator of the Jewish community of Leipnik in Moravia attests that the assigned to us, Herr Michael Zerkowitz, has up to now led an uncontestedly moral life and has honestly and diligently looked after his family and that nothing at all deleterious can be reported about him." Leipnik, 1 June 1866.

On his son's gravestone, Michael is referred to as "Geschaeftsfuehrer".

In May 1877, "Michl Zerkowitz" is seen on a list of those living outside of Leipnik but still belonging to the local "kultusgemeinde" (religious community).

When his wife died in 1902, Michael was residing at 9, Clusiusgasse 1, in Vienna. At the time of his death in 1904, "Michl Zerkowitz" is seen living at 7, Stollgasse 4 in Vienna.
