Michelle Hayward (1968 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Michelle (36), and her husband Clint Hayward (35), a couple who owned Mountainview Hotel in the Soutpansberg, Makhado, Louis Trichardt, were both shot in the head on 20th October 2004. Their 12 year-old daughter, Tamryn, found her parents bodies in their bed after she woke up and went to investigate what had happened to her father, who normally woke her.

According to superintendent Hannes Snyders, both of them were shot in the head by burglars who broke into their home next to the hotel in spite of excellent security measures. It is believed the killers were looking for keys to the hotel safe.

The couple's murder comes after several incidents of violent crimes in the past few months. In most cases, nobody has been arrested. Police are investigating the possibility that four incidents could be connected.

  • The court heard that a third Zimbabwean, Jasyson Chadhebhaglo, was also involved with the Haywards murder. The police submitted an application for his extradition back to South Africa, but no progress had been made.
  • Chirume and Marumo are facing nine charges. Including the murder of Pheneas Maluleke. The men apparently killed Maluleke in October 2004. They are also suspected of a burglary the same day as the attack on Maluleke, as well as Clinton van Graan and his wife, Jacqueline, where a laptop, coats, a flashlight and a hair dryer were stolen.
  • Chirume and Marumo are also suspected of breaking into the guest house of Clinton Bayes and his wife, Hester, in the Bluegum sports area in 2004.
