About Miles O'Brien

Miles was a loyalist solider from the Royal Fencibles American Regiment. He was granted 250 acres of land near Wallace, Nova Scotia c. 1784. (Then called Remsheg or Ramsheg) Miles was appointed one of two Surveyors of Hay & Fence Viewers for Rivers McCan & Hebert c. 1792. Miles paid poll tax in the district of Maccan, Nappan, River Hebert in 1791 and 1792.

Conjecture is that he is an ancestor of my relation John O'Brien b. 1789 and buried in Wallace. Further conjecture is that Miles is the brother of Luke O'Brien, who was granted 100 arces here at the same time.

The GANS publication "Marriages in Nova Scotia (excluding Halifax City) 1752-1841" shows a Miles O'Brien married a Hannah Boss on June 17, 1781 and that that marriage is recorded in the "Maccan/Franklyn Manor Township Book" which would suggest that this relates to the right Miles O'Brien. The date of this marriage also suggests that Miles is the father or uncle of John O'Brien; my previous conjecture had been that he was Luke's father (due to his larger land grant indicating he was a more senior soldier) and that Luke may have been John's father. It is now assumed he was Luke's brother.
