About Minnie Beckwith
Minnie was an actress with the Keith Theater Stock Company using the stage name Kate Hassett.
Miss Hassett in private life was the wife of Everett Beckwith, a business man of Chicago. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hassett, reside In Aurora, Ill. (Indianapolis journal, Volume 52, Number 342, 8 December 1902)
Per the Los Angeles Herald, the Beckwiths had been married 10 years at the time of her death and were very devoted to each other.
New York Times Dec 2, 1902 ACTOR KILLS AN ACTRESS Barry Johnston Shoots Mrs Kate Hassett in Philadephia and Then Attempts Suicide. Philadelphia, Dec. 1.--Mrs Kate Hassett, aged twenty-eight years, leading woman in Keith's Eighth Street theater stock company, was shot and killed tonight by Barry Johnston, a well-known actor, who was formerly a member of Richard Mansfield's company and who is well-known to theatrical people throughout the country. After the mruder Johnston attempted suicide.
The tragetdy occurred at Darien and Wood Streets, in Philadelphia's terderloin. Johnston fired at his victim five times. Two of the bullets taking effect, one in the left breast and the other in the left arm. Johnston shot himself throught the breast and is not expected to live. THe cuase of the tragedy is believed to be jealousy. Note: Mrs Everitt Beckwith. Obituary in Aurora Beacon News Dec 2-4, 1902. Surname provided by Cemetery Office as it does not appear on any of the markers. Buried in the Haggerty/Hassett family plot.
