About Miriam Hamburger

PLEASE NOTE: According to Rabbi Wolf Hamburger's biography, his wife Miriam [Rachel-Miriam] (d. 1836), was the GRANDDAUGHTER of Samuel Lucka, not his daughter. The biography further states that she was the daughter of "Salomon Cohen" of Prague -- the alternate name for Salomon Kohn-Zerkowitz.See https://www.fuerthwiki.de/wiki/index.php?title=Wolf_Hamburger

MIRIAM [MARIA] [RACHEL-MARIAM] KOHN-ZERKOWITZ,Miriam [Maria] b. Prague, c1770; d. in Furth, Germany, 26 Nov 1836, age about 66 yrs. She was included in her father’s household in the Prague census of 1793 [taken 20 Jun 1794] and is listed as “married”. Prag, 1793 [Judenstadt #37]: [pg. 385] ZERKOWITZ, Salomon, geldnegotiant; wife Sara, geldnegotiantin; son Lewi; daughter Maria [married]; daughter Amalia [married]; daughter Anna; and daughter Rosa [census taken 20 Jun 1794].

When the 1793-1794 census was taken, her husband is not listed, having apparently departed to his native community of Fuerth Germany. According to Moses Porges’ memoir, Salomon Zerkowitz had a son-in-law [name not given] who was living in Fuerth, Germany in 1799: “… During the night [Hoffinger] took the above-mentioned account book, which I had hidden under my pillow, and he disappeared. He sold the book to a son-in-law of Zerkowitz who lived in Furth. The latter did not make any harmful use of the book.”

Her husband was the renowned Rabbi Wolf Lippmann [aka Abraham Benjamin] Hamburger, b. Fuerth, Bavaria, 26 Jan 1770, son of Elieser Aron Lippmann Hamburg and his wife, Kreinle (Niederwern) Hamburg; d. Fuerth, 15 May 1850, age 80 yrs. They were m. in Fuerth on 1 Sep 1789.

According to her husband's biography, Miriam "carried on a business" in Fuerth and primarily supported the household. This allowed her husband to devote his time to teaching the Talmud and maintaining a leadership role in the Fuerth Jewish community.
