About Morris Brinen

Morris Brinen, his wife Anna, and their five children: Aron, Shiffra, Abraham, Joseph and baby Rose came to Ellis Island, NY from the small village of Novozybkov, Russia by ship in order to escape communism.

In Russia, the Brinens lived in a tiny house on a farm with many animals: chickens, cats, dogs, sheep, cows, etc. Morris assigned his children to take care of the animals; including milking cows & sheep to make milk and cheese, gathering eggs, and selling these products (as well as other homemade goods) at the family's small "store" they ran out of their house.

This small "store" not known by the Russian communist government at the time (early 1900's) was kept as secret as possible as the government was strictly against them owning or selling anything. Click Wikipedia definition of Communism: It was also illegal for them to practice their religion.

The Brinens knew the store was risky, and they lived in constant fear. There were only 3 other Jewish families living in this village with the Brinens at the time, and they kept quiet about buying fresh local goods at low prices.

In approximately 1913, Morris fled Russia first, in order to set up the family's new life in America prior to their arrival, and also find better medical care for their oldest child Aron who was born with a heart condition. He settled in Nebraska, and worked in a slaughter house until 1923, when he reunited with his wife, Anna and their 5 children at Ellis Island.

Morris and Anna later opened a busy dry cleaning business in Bay Ridge, NY at 69th and 4th Street. Their children helped out which helped them quickly learn English. Russian and Yiddish were spoken only in the house.

At the end of his life, Morris worked at a local synagogue (exact job uncertain).
