About Moses John Bowen

(1)MOSES BOWEN was born about 1650 allegedly in Wales and died shortly before May 20, 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Rebecca Rees.

(2)Moses was the son of Evan ab Owen, b. 1674 in Caemarthen, Wales, d. at age 86, in 1760, Montgomery Co., PA. When they first arrived in PA, they settled in Chester CO., PA. (From "Makers of America", Washington, DC, 1916, pp 491)

Although the majority of the people that he came with, were Quaker, it is thought that Moses was not, but Rebecca's name was found on some Meeting Rolls.

The Tazewell BOWENs are of Celtic blood. Their immediate ancestor was Moses BOWEN, a Welshman, who married Rebecca Rees. They came from Wales to America a good many years before the Revolution, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Moses Bowen & Rebecca Rees (originally Rhys) came from Wales to Gwynedd township, Chester county, PA (near Philadelphia) in 1698 and purchased 10,000 acres.

Very little is known about Moses Bowen and his wife Rebecca Reese. It is generally accepted that they immigrated from Wales about 1698 with a large group of settlers enticed by William Penn. Moses did purchase 10,000 acres of land in Guinnedd Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Moses and Rebecca were Quakers. Very probably they had other children besides John but none can be found in the history records.

Came to America before the Revolution and settled in Lancaster, Pa.. He and his wife moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia in about 1732 in and area now in County Rockbridge. The surname "BOWEN"is derived from the Welsh"ab Owen" or resented by a list of Christian names separated by ap"or "ab", as "William ap Robert ap James ap William ap Robert ap James ap Thomas. When one family arrived at some importance he would take as surname the Christian name of his father. So that it came that

Moses Bowen married to Rebecca Rees. They emigrated with a large company from Wales to Massachusetts. They moved to Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. One source says that he purchased 10,000 acres in Guinned Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Another source said that he and the group he arrived with purchased the land for themselves and for other friends and relatives who would be arriving afterwards. An early Quaker settler in Pa.
