About Moses Delgado
MOSES DELGADO 1789 - 1842 & LEAH DePASS / MARY ANN NUNES
Compiled by Stephen Delgado Porter 9-Feb-08
Moses Delgado was born in London, England, on the 23rd April 1789, the second son of Manasseh Delgado and his wife Rachel, nee Cohen D’Azevedo, of London. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Moses Cohen D’Azevedo, the Haham (head priest) of the Bevis Marks Sephardi Synagogue in London.
The Delgado family migrated to Jamaica, from London, in the year 1800, when Moses was about 11 years of age and, after a short residence at Port Royal (where his younger brother George was born in 1801), they moved to Kingston, the chief commercial City in the island, across the harbour.
Moses must have maintained a link with the former place as his first marriage was to Leah DePass, the eldest daughter of Jacob DePass of Port Royal. This took place on the 31st January 1811 at Port Royal. Moses was 21 years 9 months and Leah was about 20 years old.
They had 5 children, the first was born at Port Royal and the others at Kingston. The naming traditions of the Sephardi community, followed by his ancestors, were not followed by Moses as none of his children took the names of their maternal or paternal grandparents. Their children were:
- Julia Delgado on the 17th January 1812
- Henrietta Delgado on the 25th January 1813
- Angelina Delgado on the 1st November 1814
- Frederick Delgado on the 5th October 1815
- (“named on [Yom] Kippur Day at the Pen”)
- Louisa Delgado c1817
Moses remarried in Kingston the following year, on the 13th May 1819, to Mary Ann Nunes, daughter of the late Abraham Israel Nunes and Sarah his wife, of Kingston. She was also known as Marianne and presumably looked after the children by Moses first wife, aged between 2 and 7 years, when they were married.
They also had 5 children, all born in Kingston. As with his first marriage the naming traditions of his children were not followed. They were:
- Alfred Delgado on the 8th November 1820
- Edwin Delgado on the 18th November 1821
- (“Benjamin alias Edwin”)
- Horatio Delgado on the 13th January 1823
- Charles Delgado on the 1st July 1824
- Matilda Delgado on the 5th September 1827
