About Moses Edelstein

As recollected by his son Stanley.

My Dad Moses was known as Moe. Dad came from a family of 7 brothers and 5 sisters. Dad's father was killed in a horrific farm accident when he had climbed a ladder to the barn loft and slipped an was impaled on a sled runner. Moses Edelstein left Europe when he was approximately 14 or 15 years of age, which was shortly after the accident. I remember dad saying he ran away from home. As a youngster he he worked on a wagon delivering ice.

He was drafted into service in World War I in 1918 and served as a corporal. When he got discharged from service he lived on the lower east side of Manhattan New York City. The area was a mixture of ethnic immigrants and as a result he was able to learn Italian which he spoke fluently. He had roots of Latin which he learned in European schooling and he spoke polish and German.

Dad worked for a while as a motorman on the N.Y.C.transit System, and after that as a salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance company. Then he joined a company named Jampel that sold everything you could imagine knocking door to door, walking down streets and selling whomever would buy his wares.

He sold William Rogers silverware settings for eight, and got customers to buy clothing and linens from Jampel and Company.

After learning all about the workings of Jampel Company Dad got into his own business and opened "Edeson's Outfitting company" which was patterned after the Jampel firm. Dad sold watches to a lot of Chinese who worked in restaurants and invariably learned some Chinese, enough to conduct his business and then some. He eventually hired a Chinese man named Yip Wah who spoke English fluently and helped dad tremendously in sales and in linguistic abilities in Chinese. Unfortunately Yip wah went back to China and when he did dad lost a lot of money because Yip Wah did not keep the greatest records and dad could not collect money frommany accounts that Yip Wah sold .to.

The name stood for Edelstein and son's.

To back track a bit, When Dad got out of service he met and married Helen Klar, our motrher and she gave Moses Edelstein four son's being Arthur, Franklin, Stanley and Stephen.

Arthur was born in 1921, Franklin 1925, Stanley 1929 and Stephen 1938. Moses met Helen at a restaurant owned by an aunt in Williamsburgh Area of Brooklyn and shortly after were married.

Dad loved to gamble. He loved to play cards, pinochle, clobiosh etc. He'd bet on the horse races, boxing etc.

After many a year of losing at gambling he finally connected with one of his card playing buddies and won quite a few thousand dollars on a horse called North Park. Dad invested the winnings by buying another peddlers business and that's when I started working for my Dad. It was 1948 and my first new car a 1948 Plymouth.

I know that Dad died at age 87 which would have been about 1981.
