About Moses Redmond

The following is an overview of the Redman / Redmond Story;

Moses Redmond & Rebecca Dunn, who along with 12 of their 13 children and Moses' cousin ( or half-brother or step-brother) John Redmond & his wife Roseanna Dunn and 4 children, emigrated from County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1818 to North America. Once in North America, the children each took on different variations of the last name Redman / Readman / Readmon / Redmon / Redmond. Moses and Rebecca's daughter Molly and her husband William Gaston and two sons came later to Musquodoboit and Tangier (in Nova Scotia, Canada).

They had lived in Dunminning, Antrim County, Ireland, and were owners of a flax mill.

The Dunn Sisters were of a prosperous Irish family.

They left Ireland on 04/August/1818 and set sail for South Carolina, USA. They had sold their flax mill and farms, in County Antrim, Ireland (July/1818) and had purchased a plantation in the Carolinas.

They were ship wrecked off Nova Scotia on 02/October/1818. Their sailing vessel was blown off course by a great storm in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Nova Scotia. After a great deal of difficulty the passengers were rescued and taken to Halifax. The "Acadian", a Halifax weekly paper, reported on October 10, 1818; "The Brig "Fame" (The Master being; Captain James Hardy) from Belfast, Ireland, for this place, out 49 days with 114 passengers went on shore Sunday (02/Oct/1818) about 11:00 o'clock at Cole Harbour. Passengers and crew saved."

Moses and family spent the winter of 1818 - 1819 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and in the spring of 1819 they went up the Musquodoboit River (Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada) and settled in Upper Musquodoboit. They were granted land there in about 1823.

Some of the folks stayed in Nova Scotia, the rest went to many corners of Canada and the USA; North Carolina, Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, New York, Washington, the Yukon, Alberta, Alaska, Iowa, Illinois, Wyoming etc.. It is believed that they were originally headed for North or South Carolina, where they had bought a Plantation.

The family's exact ancestry prior to 1818 is sketchy.

Moses' and Rebecca's original 13 children's names were; Samuel, Francis, Moses, John R., Robert, William, David, James, Elizabeth, Rose Ann, Mary, Jean and Andrew. And John's & Roseanne's were; Moses, Rebecca, Jennie and Janet. I (R.W. Rick Redmond) am a descendant of the 1st Moses' and Rebecca's Son, Samuel.
