About Moses Shapiro

Moses Shapiro was a prominent American attorney and executive, most known for his time as chair and chief executive of General Instrument Corp., from which he retired in 1997. He was also an active corporate director and consultant, including for Welbilt and Toys R Us.

Shapiro graduated from Fordham University in 1929 and received a Bachelor of Laws from St. Lawrence University in 1932. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1933 and spent the first two decades of his career working in private practice, industrial relations, and labor arbitration.

In 1955, he joined General Instrument as executive vice president and became president five years later. In 1969, he became chair and CEO. Upon his retirement in 1977, he remained with the company as a director, and also became a distinguished adjunct professor of law at New York University and a lecturer at the City College of New York's Practicing Law Institute.

Shapiro was a recipient of Italy's Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity (for foreigners who made an outstanding contribution to the reconstruction of Italy after World War II) and was also honored by the government of China.
