Myrtle Rian

Myrtle Rian, 102, Hawley, MN, died on Sunday, October 28, 2012, in the Hawley Manor under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Myrtle Steen was born on August 1, 1910, at home in Dale, MN, to Johann and Johanna (Sandman) Steen. She grew up and attended school at Dale and Hawley, MN. As a young woman, she worked in Minneapolis as a housekeeper and as a nurse at Northwestern Hospital. She married John O. Rian in Minneapolis and they lived at Harris, MN, for a time before moving to Lake Park, MN, where they farmed for many years. She worked at Sunnyside Nursing Home as a nurse for 33 years, retiring at the age of 75. John died on November 17, 1997. Myrtle moved into Hawley in 2001. She had been an active member of the Dale Covenant Church until it closed. She loved caring for people at the nursing home. Myrtle is survived by her son, Ed (Donna) Rian, Lake Park, MN; two daughters, Marlys Leiser, Audubon, MN, and Karen (Gary) Meidt, Northfield, MN; eleven grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
