About Nadia Brezinski

Paw Paw, Michigan

Formerly of Oakla, Sask.

Passed away Wednesday morning, November 20, 2002 while asleep at home in Paw Paw. Wife of Peter M Brezinski, who died last year, Nadia was born circa November 18, 1918, as the eighth of ten, and last surviving child, of Ivan and Ahafia (Tatuch) Maksymowicz, in the village of Losovotko, near Krivi Rih, Ukraine. That's where Ivan, after searching all over Ukraine, had found his missing family displaced by war. Then, as Nadia vividly recalled, came local outbreak of revolution and her family returning by Conestoga wagon train to their home village of Kolikiew, near Lviv (at that time, in Poland.) In 1929, father Ivan, a shoemaker without enough dowry to marry off all his daughters, sold everything for ship tickets to Canada, where they built a log cabin homestead in Oakla, Sask. At fourteen, Nadia left home for housekeeping work in Saskatoon, then for the mayor of Windsor, Ont., where she learned English. On January 30, 1943 in Hamtramck, MI, Nadia was united in marriage to Peter Brezinski, from Invermay, Sask. After his discharge from the Canadian Army, Peter and Nadia moved to Detroit, MI, where besides raising family and garden, she also worked as a cafeteria supervisor at Mercy Hospital and the University of Detroit. In 1979, Nadia and Peter retired to Paw Paw, Michigan. Surviving are her son Donald and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and adult sisters and brothers, Anna Kurylo (of Kolikiew), Maria Wojtowicz, Katia Barteski, and Stephen Maksymovich, plus her siblings who had died in childhood, John, Michael, Pylagia, Fedor, and Vera. Family will receive friends Saturday 6-8 p.m. and Sunday 4-6 p.m. at
