Last Will and Testament of Nancy Gilbert

"Nancy Ann Cheek Gilbert was a beautiful woman of German descent--a small, dark-skinned woman, with a heavy suit of long, wavy hair reaching nearly to the ground" (p. 37)

I Nancey Gilbert of Lee County and State of Virginia, being weak in body but of sound mind, doth make this my last will and testament in the manner and form folling,

First, It is my desire that my hereinafter named Executor after my Decease will have my body Buried in a decent manner out of my Estate, likwise pay all my just debts, the balance than remaining on hand to divided as follows,

It is my desire that my son James Gilbert have the plantation whereon I now live, one hundred acres be the same more or less.

It is my desire that Nancey Standerford, Sally and Roanna Standerford children of my Daughter Polley who was married to William Standerford have all my wearing appareel without being appraised to be equally divided, except my Mantle which my said gran Daughter ? Standerford is to have over and above the others of my said gran Daughters, also I give my spinning wheel to the said Sally Standerford and the above mentioned Nancy Standerford my reel.

It is my desire that my son James Gilbert pay unto my grandson William M. Gilbert the son of my said son James Gilbert twenty five dollars in good (trads?) that my said son James is owing me.

I give unto my grand Daughter Nancey Gilbert the Daughter of my son James Gilbert my looking (?)--I give unto John Standerford who was legalley bound to me untill he arrive to the age of twenty one years of age, a certain speckled cow as his freedom (due?).

The balance of my estate to be sold by the Executor at twelve months, credit and to be divided Equally amongst my grand children by the names of Joseph and Nancy. After my Executors, paying unto grandson William M. Gilbert the sum of twenty dollars, the money arrising from said property to be just out on interest and to be paid out by my Executor or his survivor to the said Grand children as they become of lawful age.

It is my desire that my beloved son James Gilbert be my Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other Wills or parts of Wills made or executed by me.

Signed and acknowledged in the presence of the two witnesses annexed this 13th day of January 1826.
