He graduated, with high honors at Amhurst College, Massachusetts. In 1845 he located in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was a distinguished lawyer. He was elected to the Supreme bench of Louisiana, 1854; resigned in 1858; elected to US Senate, 1877, by the unanimous vote of the Nicholls Legislature, but in the complication of the politics of the period, he was cheated out of his seat. After his death the US Senate admitted his title to the senatorship by paying to his widow the eighteen thousand dollars attached to the office up to the time of his demise.
