About Napoleon Koscialowski

Napoleon Koscialowski arrived in New York on March 28, 1834. He was one of the 235 Polish exiles from Trieste, sent to America by Austria following the 1830 November Upraising. He was a friend of Edward Młodzianowski. He was one of the three Poles who settled in the Morgan County, Illinois for a brief period of time (1839-1842) claiming their land grant.

He lived in Albany, New York for awhile working as an artist, and later as a teacher for the Northampton Female Seminary in Massachusetts. Later in 1839 he went to Jacksonville, Illinois and worked in that region as a farmer. Unfortunately he could not make it as a farmer and declared bankruptcy in February of 1842. After the death of his daughter, Clara, they moved to St. Louis, and Napoleon started his business there as a surveyor and engineer.

He served in the American-Mexican War (1846-1848). In 1846 as Captain he joined the Third Missouri Infantry and took part in the famous Doniphan Expedition. Later he was part of the Company E, Unit Gilpin's Battalion, Missouri Infantry.

After his discharge in 1848, he and the family moved back to Jacksonville, Illinois where Napoleon worked as an architect. After his job in Springfield was over, he left his wife and moved east. Then he joined the marines for five years.
