Nathan J. Saltz

Professor Nathan J. Saltz (Hebrew: נתן זלץ) was an American-born Israeli doctor who is considered the "Father and Founder" of modern surgical medicine in Israel.

Biography

He was born in New York in 1912 and graduated from the Emory University School of Medicine. Following his internship he joined the US Army Medical Corps in 1941, and served as a Battalion surgeon for four years participating in the North African Campaign and the Salerno invasion in Italy. During this time he lost his hearing and was awarded a Purple Heart. He also was awarded three Bronze Stars. After World War II he trained at NY University and was Chief Resident in Surgery at the New York University Bellevue Medical Center. In 1950, he moved to Israel with his wife (Dr. Armen Saltz), settling in Jerusalem, where he practiced medicine at the Hadassah Medical Center.

Awards

• In 1978, Saltz was awarded the Israel Prize, for medicine. In their decision, the members of the Israel Prize committee noted that "Professor Saltz is outstanding in his honesty and humility, responsibility, humane approach, and willingness to help patients in all extremities. He has cut a shining path for other practitioners of medicine".
• In 1984, he received the Yakir Yerushalayim (Worthy Citizen of Jerusalem) award from the city of Jerusalem.
• He received an honorary Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
• He has received Yakir Hadassah awards.

זלץ נולד בשנת 1912 בניו יורק שבארצות הברית. בילדותו עבר עם משפחתו לפלורידה, ממנה עבר ללמוד רפואה באוניברסיטת אמורי באטלנטה. במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה שימש רופא צבאי בצבא ארצות הברית ונכח בקרבות בצפון אפריקה ובאיטליה

בשובו לארצות הברית התמחה בכירורגיה ובשנת 1950 נענה לבקשת ארגון "הדסה" וייסד מחדש את המחלקה הכירורגית בבית החולים הדסה בירושלים, שצומצמה פעילותה לאחר מלחמת העצמאות. בסיום עבודתו שב לניו יורק, אך בשנת 1953 נתבקש להתמנות למנהל המחלקה ועלה ארצה

נתן זלץ היה פרופסור באוניברסיטה העברית. זלץ כונה בפי רבים "אבי הכירורגיה המודרנית בישראל" והנהיג בישראל את השיטה האמריקאית, המכשירה רופאים זוטרים וחדשים לבצע ניתוחים כירורגים. תוכנית ההתמחות שהנהיג אומצה ושולבה במערך הרפואי הארצי. לאחר מלחמת ששת הימים ומלחמת יום הכיפורים יזם את הקמת מערך החירום בבתי החולים

לאחר פרישתו מ"הדסה" הוזמן לייסד ולנהל את המחלקה הכירורגית בבית החולים ביקור חולים, ממנה פרש בשנת 1991.

בשנת תשל"ח זכה בפרס ישראל לרפואה

בשנת 1984 הוענק לו התואר "יקיר ירושלים". י
