for the very sad case of Markwell vs. Pereles, in which Nathan Markwell sued his brother- and sister-in law, James Madison Pereles and Jennie Weil Pereles, for custody of Nathan's daughter, Fanny. James and Jennie had taken over custody of Fanny at the death of her mother, James's sister, Julia, claiming that Nathan had consented with a handshake and that Julia, prior to her death, had requested that Fanny be raised by James and Jennie. Soon after Nathan's marriage to Fanny Taussig, he sued for custody of little Fanny and won. The Pereles family were evidently heartbroken as they had become attached to the little girl, but her life with her father and stepmother was evidently pleasant enough for her to give the Markwell name to two of her children. Nathan and Fanny Taussig Markwell named their daughter after Julia Pereles Markwell, Nathan's first wife.
