I can remember visiting Tante Laika and Uncle Nissie when I was a young child. Several times I would walk over to their apartment with my father, after High Holiday services or Passover, from the People of Truth synagogue. They lived in a basement, they were both in their nineties. She wore a wig and he wore a toupee. Both were on a little crooked. I didn't like their apartment, it was dark, and full of antiques that I didn't appreciate at that age. But every time we walked in, there were delicious smells of cakes and pastries coming from the kitchen, and I really enjoyed eating fresh homemade cakes!
