About Corp. Nathan Sholes

Killed in defense of Fort Griswold, September 6, 1781

Corporal Nathan was killed at the Massacre of Ft. Griswold by the British who surrounded and burned the fort with everyone inside. Few escaped the blaze, women, children and men and soldiers were killed. Coincidentally, Nathan's Father's 2nd wife - Lucy - had two children from her first marriage that did escape the fire.

Nathan was buried at the Widger family farm cemetery. This land was later sold to enlarge the reservoir and the graves moved to the other side of the lake at Morgan Pond, Ledyard, Cn. Someone donated a "plaque" - his stone being worn by age(my guess) and called him a "Capt." instead of the corporal he was. A visit to the Ft. Griswold memorial & the site is sobering.
